Shine the Light on Woman Abuse Campaign

King's will be turning the campus purple for the month of November to raise awareness for the Shine the Light on Woman Abuse Campaign 2021. Shine the Light on Woman Abuse is a registered trademarked public awareness campaign of the London Abused Women’s Centre.  The campaign was launched in 2010 in London, Ontario, Canada and continues to spread across our country and beyond. In 2017 communities in Sweden and Australia adopted the campaign bringing it to the international level.

The goals of the Shine the Light on Woman Abuse campaign are to raise awareness of men’s violence against women by turning communities purple for the month of November; to stand in solidarity with abused women and support them in understanding that any shame and/or blame they may feel does not belong to them but to the perpetrators of their abuse; and to raise the profile of the community agencies that can provide abused women with help as they attempt to live their lives free from violence and abuse. Purple is a symbol of courage, survival and honour, and has come to symbolize the fight to end woman abuse.

You can also participate as follows:

  • Be part of the wear Purple Day on Monday, November 15
  • Post your participation on your social media by tweeting your photos at us @endwomanabuse or tag us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram at the same handle and use the hashtag #ShineTheLight.
  • Any member of the King's community wearing purple on campus on November 15 is invited to gather in front of Dante Lenardon Hall at 11:15 a.m. for a photo to be shared on King's social media platforms.

Your participation is instrumental to the success of this event. For over 35 years the London Abused Women’s Centre provides advocacy, counselling and support to abused, prostituted, sex trafficked and sexually harassed women thereby increasing their safety and that of their children. The agency believes that men and women working together can end this atrocity, and we value your efforts in raising awareness of this issue.
