Dr. Erin Hannah, Professor of Politics and International Relations, has been appointed Associate Dean of Research (ADR), effective July 1, 2023.

This new position will be important in helping to develop King’s research agenda.

Dr. Hannah will oversee establishing research infrastructure and support, promoting equity, diversity, inclusion and decolonization in research practices, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations, and positioning King's as a leading research center with a strong commitment to justice, community orientation, and a transformative Catholic liberal arts education.

“I could not be more excited to take on this new leadership role at King’s. As the inaugural Associate Dean of Research, I will help establish a holistic understanding of research that is inclusive of a wide variety of research traditions, including Indigenous ways of knowing as a pathway toward reconciliation.  Community-based engagement, public intellectual work, knowledge mobilization beyond the university, the dissemination of ideas about pedagogical innovations, building external partnerships including with local First Nations, are all examples of the impactful research that will be supported and celebrated at King’s,” says Dr. Hannah.

She has been teaching at King’s since 2008 and was named Full Professor on July 1, 2023. Previously, Dr. Hannah served as the Chair of the Politics and International Relations department (formerly Political Science) from 2016-2022. Her research and teaching interests include global political economy, gender and trade, sustainable development, global governance, global civil society, the role of expert knowledge in global trade, and innovative pedagogy.

Dr. Hannah currently holds a SSHRC Insight Grant (with Dr. Silke Trommer and Dr. Adrienne Roberts at the University of Manchester) to examine gender mainstreaming in global trade governance and its implications for redressing inequality, exclusion, and disempowerment in the global economy. She is co-editor of Expert Knowledge in Global Trade (Abingdon: Routledge, 2015), and author of NGOs and Global Trade: Non-State Voices in EU Trade Policymaking (Abingdon: Routledge, 2016).

She has assumed the editorship from Dr. John Ravenhill of Global Political Economy 7th Edition, Oxford University Press, in press), the best-selling textbook worldwide in her field. “Consistent with my commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization (EDID), this edition has been thoroughly updated to account for new contemporary developments and integrates non-Western views and themes such as gender and race throughout the book,” says Dr. Hannah.

The King’s community is grateful to Dr. Hannah for accepting this new role and appreciates the work it will take for her to establish it.

“Having worked with Erin for many years now, both as faculty members and Chairs, I know firsthand the talent, experience and strategic vision she brings to the position of Associate Dean of Research.  As demonstrated in her commitments to mobilizing knowledge through impactful research, teaching and public policy advocacy, Erin has a strong appreciation of the need to build a research infrastructure at King’s that aligns with the mission of sharing what we learn through research to serve the common good,” says Dr. Robert Ventresca, Interim Vice-President Academic Dean.

The ADR assists the Vice-President Academic Dean in the planning, development and implementation of King’s policies, programs and practices related to research, consistent with the goals and objectives of the Academic and Strategic Plans. The ADR also assists in the development and enhancement of King’s research strategic directions, including oversight of the Research Office and the development and implementation of an institutional research strategy.

“At heart, a strong research culture is about the production and transmission of knowledge, which is the fundamental mission of the university,” says Dr. Ventresca.

Dr. Hannah will be teaching POL 4418G: International Trade Law and Negotiation in the Winter 2024 term.

Congratulations to Dr. Hannah on being appointed to the role of Associate Dean of Research.
