A message from Dr. David Malloy, King's Principal:

Over the course of the summer, as our communities have come together to try to put an end to systemic racism, a decision was made to join together with our colleagues at Brescia University College to form a joint Anti-Racism working group. This new group will advise the Acting Principal of Brescia, Dr. John Mitchell, and myself on how we can stop and prevent racism on campus and as a community.

With your feedback, we have developed a framework and Terms of Reference for this working group. We are now placing a call for interest in membership in the group. Those interested can begin the process by filling out the application form.

We will be looking for representation from a broad range of stakeholder groups at Brescia and King's including students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Membership is to be reflective of the diversity that is a strength of the Brescia and King's communities, paying particular attention to ensuring there is representation based on lived experience with racism in all its forms (e.g., anti-Black, anti-Indigenous, anti-Semitic, Islamophobia, etc.).

Except where noted, expressions of interest to be a member of the Working Group will be solicited and submitted to the Principal's Office on each respective campus. Nominations to represent the King's University College Students' Council and the Brescia University College Students' Council will be submitted by the organizations to the Principal's Office at each respective institution.

As a Catholic university, we must commit to change which will stop oppression. As a community, we are committed to taking steps towards stopping racism on our campus. It is important that King's and Brescia are working together on a common set of social justice values. This is putting our Catholic values and social teaching, such as the inherent dignity of the human person, into action.

In addition, King's is developing a new role to advise the campus and myself on Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity.

In the meantime, I am continuing to dialogue with the members of our community on this issue including our faculty doing research in this important area and the KUCSC. If you wish to share your ideas, please do not hesitate to email me.

As always, take care of yourself, each other and we will work together to make King's a place where the values of equity, diversity, and inclusion are put into action.
