King’s Associate Professor of Psychology, Dr. Cathy Chovaz presented at The XVII World Congress of the World Federation of the Deaf on Friday, July 31st in Istanbul, Turkey. In speaking specifically about Mental Health of Deaf People in Canada, Dr. Chovaz highlighted the diagnoses of the mental health of deaf people by medical professionals. She urged that the medical profession must be able to communicate in sign language in order to carry out proper diagnoses.

Dr. Chovaz teaches courses in clinical psychology and her area of expertise is mental health and deafness. Chovaz is Canada’s first Deaf clinical psychologist. She also maintains a consultation private practice. In addition to teaching at King’s, Dr. Chovaz is also cross-appointed in the Department of Psychiatry at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University.
