In advance of the 2021 Federal Election, the King's Political Science Students’ Association (KPSSA) hosted a debate night for candidates of London North Centre in the Kenny Theatre on September 14, 2021.

(Update: The debate was live streamed and can be viewed here.)

The debate was a great success, according to organizers, with a good turnout both in-person and virtually. Each candidate addressed the audience, both virtually and in the Kenny Theatre, and answered questions prepared by members of the KPSSA. While a limited number of students were able to attend the debate in-person, the debate was also live streamed.

Participating candidates included Liberal candidate, Peter Fragiskatos ’04, NDP candidate, Dirka Prout and Green Party candidate, Mary Ann Hodge. All candidates were invited to participate.

“We believe voting is very important. Many younger students are unaware of what each party represents, and this event gave students a way to see what each party has to offer. The debates at King’s have always been successful, so we wanted to continue to educate,” said Victoria Hinkson, 4th Year Honours Specialization in Political Science, who helped to organize the event with Clara Graham, Dr. Erin Hannah, Associate Professor of Politics and International Relations, and members of the KPSSA.

Members of the KPSSA and other King’s students volunteered to be part of the event. They got to experience working with politicians, creating critical-thinking questions and preparing a large-scale event.

“A nice bonus is that volunteers got to meet and interact with the candidates for London North Centre. The candidates did an excellent job of presenting their platforms, which helped students decide who to vote for,” says Hinkson.

The debate was an opportunity for the community to learn more about the candidates they would be considering voting for, as part of the upcoming election. The candidates themselves were very grateful for the opportunity to discuss important topics, says Hinkson.
