Equity at The Write Place, King's College and Beyond

Since 2018, The Write place has opened its academic year, along with its tutor preparation by reflecting on, and committing to, ethical and philosophical principles that uphold educational equity and enrichment through diversity. We invite the wider King's community to reflect with us as we listen to experts with lived experience. In this session, Director of Services for CASLM, Michelle Young speaks to the issue of embedded racism in organizational spaces and how to acknowledge and confront this problem.
Michelle Young is the first person of colour in the role of a Director of Service with the Children's Aid Society of London & Middlesex. Her passion has always been using her voice to challenge oppression and the status quo in all areas of her life, so having the lead role in guiding her agency through a multi-year organizational change of embedding equity into the fabric of the agency is a natural fit. Michelle is also the founder and principal consultant of Centre Truth, where she designs and delivers workshops and training sessions on equity, diversity and inclusion to the public and private sectors. She enjoys public speaking and being a guest lecturer. She possesses the unique skills to challenge oppressive thoughts and practices with compassion combined with patience and a genuine commitment to the learning and growth of others. She has demonstrated strong communication skills that are empowering, inclusive, engaging, non-confrontational and direct.
