Senator Murray Sinclair, Chief Commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, will speak on “The Future of Truth and Reconciliation” to open the Veritas Series on September 26, 2019, at 7 p.m. His presentation will take place in the Joanne & Peter Kenny Theatre in the Darryl J. King Student Life Centre. The free event is open to the public and will be hosted by King’s Campus Ministry and co-sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph. Parking is available on campus.

Although the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) released the report in 2015, much remains to be done to ensure all Canadians understand and implement its recommendations. Senator Sinclair will use his experience as the Chief Commissioner of the TRC, where he participated in hundreds of hearings across Canada, as he discusses the current state of affairs following the TRC’s report and what we can anticipate moving forward.

Senator Sinclair has served the justice system in Manitoba for over 25 years. He was the first Indigenous Judge appointed in Manitoba and the second appointed in Canada. He served as an adjunct professor of law at the University of Manitoba. He has won numerous awards, including the National Aboriginal Achievement Award, the Manitoba Bar Association’s Equality Award (2001) and its Distinguished Service Award (2016). He has received Honorary Doctorates from eight Canadian universities. He was appointed to the Senate on April 2, 2016 and has been invited to speak throughout Canada, the United States and Internationally.

The speech will be the first of the Veritas Series for the 2019/2020 academic year. The theme of this year’s Veritas Series is “Renewal.” In the midst of the many challenges facing our nation and our communities of faith, participants in the series will be presented with opportunities to consider and evaluate on where to find hope and direction for the future of Canada.

Other speakers in the series will include Father James Martin, Dr. Brian Flanagan, Bishop Linda Nicholls, Dr. Pamela Cushing, Rabbi Laura Kaplan, and Shane Claiborne.
