Football player Garret Sanvido and soccer player Lauren Winquist have been named the first Western Mustangs Goodlife Fitness Athletes of the Week for the 2012-13 season.

Sanvido helped the Mustangs football team open their 2012 campaign with a 54-10 victory over the Waterloo Warriors on Monday afternoon. Sanvido racked up 144 yards rushing on only 14 carries and scored 3 touchdowns in the contest. It was the second straight season opener that he ran for over 100 yards, rushing for 141 yards in last season’s debut.

“He did a great job running the football, he only had a few reps but great acceleration,” said head coach Greg Marshall. “It was an outstanding performance. There was a lot of pressure on him coming in, it was his first start for us at running back, but he got our offence off to great start.”

Winquist was impressive in her first pair of CIS games, and was one of the key factors in the Mustangs going undefeated on the year’s opening weekend. Winquist scored in both of the weekend’s games, the lone goal in Friday’s win over the University of Ontario Institute of Technology and one on Monday against the Winsor Lancers.

“Lauren scored the winning goal vs UOIT and followed that up with a goal and an assist at Windsor while playing every minute of both games,” said head coach Martin Painter. “She has great pace, an unbelievable work ethic and excellent movement off the ball. She can finish with either foot and has had a great start to her OUA career.”
