From March 25-29, King’s will be hosting its first-ever Free Income Tax Clinic, in the Wemple computer lab (W022). During the Income Tax Clinic, King’s students will help their fellow students file their tax returns, offering services on a drop-in basis from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

The King’s service is being organized by Eugenia He, Rasha Shamas-Toma and Chandler Mills, students in the School of Management Economics and Mathematics (MEM). The students will be working on a volunteer basis. With assistance from videos provided by the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA), He, Shamas-Toma and Mills, delivered in-person training to other student volunteers who will work in the clinic.

The event is open to students, faculty and staff who have a simple tax situation and an income of $30,000 or less. The Income Tax clinic is being organized by King’s EconoMath Society and the King’s School of MEM.

Similar events have been held at Western University for several years.  He says the idea came about as a way to assist students with an often stressful experience during the busy exam period. “I think that the King’s community should have a Tax Clinic as well, since our community is growing every year.” She had heard of students experiencing long waits for the service at Western so she wanted to make the service more accessible on the King’s campus. She also wanted to create awareness of this service to International students who are inexperienced with Canadian Income Tax Returns.

“My expectation for this event is to help all students with their income tax filing in a convenient and helpful way,” He says. “This is a service run by King's students who volunteer and learn new skills for their resume.” More volunteers are still needed and would be welcomed, He adds.

Students attending the Income Tax Clinic are asked to bring the following:

  • Social Insurance Number
  • T2202 (You can find this at student.uwo.ca)
  • T4A (You can find this at kingscollege.net/sfsPortal)

  • Bank information (Branch number, institution number, account number)
  • Rent receipts
  • Last year’s income tax files (if applicable)
