With new census data released on February 9, 2022, Dr. Don Kerr, Professor of Sociology, shared his demographic expertise with several media outlets to explain the data and what it means to the area.

The London region is among Canada’s fastest growing metropolitan areas, with a 10 per cent increase in population in the last five years (2016-2021). It is the fastest-growing area in Ontario and behind only Kelowna, Kamloops and Nanaimo, B.C. in Canada.

Dr. Kerr says he would have been surprised to learn London hadn’t experienced growth, as the city was growing even before the pandemic. He says the population continues to grow despite the area’s low birth rate.

Migration from people outside Canada and other parts of the country and the province has driven the recent growth for London and surrounding communities. The region’s high ranking is also the result of some of the growth seen in London’s neighbouring communities: Lucan has grown by 20.9 per cent and Strathroy-Caradoc has grown by 14.4 per cent.
