"Degree in Problem-Solving" now available at King's
October 20, 2025
The School of Management, Economics, and Mathematics (MEM) is excited to announce that the Analytics and Decision Sciences (ADS) major has been approved. ADS is one of the newest disciplines in Canada, and this program, supported by the Canadian Operational Research Society, is available exclusively at King’s.
“With a strong focus on solving business problems, ADS equips students to use optimization, machine learning, AI, modelling, forecasting, and simulation to tackle complex, real-world challenges,” says Dr. Joseph Turnbull, Associate Professor and Associate Director (Math and ADS) of the School of MEM.
Dr. Turnbull likens the ADS major to a degree in problem-solving, as it combines human insight with technical skills. The program provides a foundation in mathematics and statistics to effectively use modern tools like machine learning and AI, paired with training in behavioural science and ethical decision-making.
ADS students can also complete a double major in four years by combining ADS with Management (including Accounting, Finance, and more), Economics, Financial Economics, Psychology, Politics and International Relations, or almost any other discipline. They may also combine ADS with Western University programs, such as Computer Science and Data Science.
“By their final year, students will be working directly with industry partners on their projects and will be market-ready with the technical skills and abilities employers are looking for,” adds Dr. Turnbull.
