There is a new outlet for King’s students to maintain and augment their athletic skills. King’s has received an extramural membership with the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) and is now an associate member of Ontario Collegiate Recreation (OCR).  King’s will now be able to take part in extramural men’s basketball.

Jason Neyers, ’95 BA Honours in History and Politics and International Relations, coach of the King’s extramural basketball team and a director of Thames Valley Basketball Academy, says playing extramural sports is an opportunity for our student-athletes to maintain and augment their skills and engage in higher-level competition by competing against other club teams in the province.

“They also get to represent King’s and be part of the King’s community,” says Neyers.

Joe Henry, Dean of Students, says that, as in previous years, King’s will also be providing funds to help support Western’s Women’s football club as they compete as a club team in the in the Ontario Women’s Intercollegiate Flag Football League.

The OCR sanctions and administers extramural sports in which teams representing their campuses compete against other college and university campuses for either an individual event championship or an overall extramural sport championship.

Currently, King’s is the only part of Western that is part of OCR. “This is something special for King’s and the ability to organize leagues might give students another reason to come to King’s,” says Neyers.

“My hope is to expand King’s involvement to other extramural sports, including hockey, mixed volleyball, cricket and a full suite of women’s sports in the future,” says Henry.

Representatives from both the King’s extramural basketball team and Western’s women’s football club will be attending the Get Involved Week, which takes place September 18-21 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day in the Spriet Lounge in the Student Life Centre. Anyone interested in participating is encouraged to visit their tables and learn more from representatives from each team.
