Dr. Carmen McCarron has been teaching French language, literature and translation in the King’s French Program since 2019. She previously taught at Western, Huron, Brescia, The University of Calgary and Mount Royal College.

Responding to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action, Dr. McCarron developed Western’s first-ever course on French-Language Indigenous Literature and Culture in 2017, in collaboration with Indigenous knowledge-keepers and scholars. The course is now an integral part of the French program at King’s.

Dr. McCarron was nominated for the King’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2021-22, 2022-23, 2023-24 and 2024-25 and has received multiple Excellence in Teaching distinctions at Western and Brescia.

Dr. McCarron’s areas of interest include 20th- and 21st-century French and Francophone literatures and cultures; Holocaust and genocide survivor testimony; French-Language Indigenous literature; Sociocriticism; Technological advances in translation and teaching (AI); Uncovering the “Hidden Curriculum” in post-secondary teaching and learning.

  • Formalizing the “hidden curriculum” as an essential but often overlooked area of language study for undergraduate French students
