Dermot Hurley, Associate Professor at the School of Social Work, presented two papers at the Joint World Conference on Social Work Education and Social Development in Dublin, Ireland on July 4-7.

The first paper was entitled “"Promoting Resilience with People Experiencing Serious and Persistent Mental Ill Health,” and it was also selected for presentation as part of an international panel of experts on mental health.

The theme of the paper was "Exploring Resilience and Mental Health in Service Users and Practitioner in Ireland and Canada,” based on joint research conducted in 2017. Professor Hurley co-presented the symposium with Professor Gloria Kirwan, Trinity College, Dublin. This paper is currently under review for publication in the European Journal of Social Work (2019).

“It was a rare privilege to be invited to speak at this international conference where important knowledge exchange about global social issues took place with colleagues from universities across the world,” Hurley says.

The Joint World Conference on Social Work Education and Social Development drew was a large meeting with over 1,500 delegates from all over the world.

Hurley will continue his research on Resilience and Mental Health during a six month sabbatical with colleagues in Argentina and Ireland in 2019.
