The King’s University College Students’ Council (KUCSC) was proud to recently announce it has raised a total of $2,656 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC) during the 2018-2019 academic year.

“This has been the most we have raised for an organization since I became involved with the KUCSC and I am very proud of what we were able to accomplish this year,” says Emily Skinner, KUCSC Vice-President Student Events, fourth-year Double Major in Political Science and English.

Skinner shared how the KUCSC Charity Team decided to support LLSC: “I was approached by Jenny Calder, a representative of LLSC, who was looking to create a partnership with the KUCSC so that more people would know about the work of the organization. I pitched this organization to my Associate Vice-President of Student Events and Charity Commissioners to be our charity of the year and everyone was on board. The LLSC not only works to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma and other blood cancers, but they also provide much-needed support to patients, which we found really important.”

To raise the money, Skinner worked with the KUCSC Charity Commissioners Kelsey Dallaire and Chloe Duggal to create a series of fundraising events that raised a total of $1,356. These events included:

  • Charity Pub events throughout the 2018-19 academic year
  • Christmas Photos on December 11th-13th, 2018 in the Student Life Centre (SLC)
  • Krispy Kreme Donuts Fundraiser on March 25th, 2019 in SLC

The remaining $1,300 dollars was raised through an event called “Light the Night Walk” on October 13, 2018. Donors provided this amount through sponsorship of the KUCSC Charity team on their team page or directly to the participants in the walk. The KUCSC Charity Team and approximately twenty students with their families participated in this walk through downtown London. The KUCSC Charity Team also helped show their support for the event by working with first-year students and their Sophs to promote awareness of the “Light the Night Walk” event in Victoria Park for O-Serves Day on September 8th, 2018 during Orientation Week.

“I hope that the work of the KUCSC Charity Team will continue to grow so that we can continue to make a positive impact on our community,” Skinner adds.
