King’s welcomes approximately 110 secondary school students from 30 schools across Ontario on May 2, 2019 to participate in debates and discussions. The topics are wide-ranging and relevant to today’s youth including Ontario’s Doug Ford government, the UN Special Committee for Peace, and Yemen’s Humanitarian Crisis, as part of the ninth annual King’s Model United Nations (KMUN).

“KMUN is an opportunity for secondary school students to hone their debating skills, engage in exciting political discussions and make new connections. King’s is excited to host this annual event where students can nurture their social and political interests and gain new skills and experience,” says Julia Eastabrook, King’s On-Campus Events Coordinator.

This year’s KMUN event is being held in the Daryl J. King Student Life Centre. The goal is to help students grow their skills in the political world and build connections with one another.

The event will include a keynote speech by Dr. John Grant, Associate Professor of Political Science. Grant’s keynote speech, “Who are your people? Populism for and against democracy,” will be discussing populist politics, elites, and who benefits from the decisions that populists make.

Following Dr. Grant’s talk, students are scheduled to participate in sessions to discuss the following topics:

  • European Migration Crisis
  • Ford's Government
  • UN Special Committee for Peace
  • Yemen's Humanitarian Crisis
  • Star Wars: Senate of the New Republic

These sessions will be run by current King’s students who have volunteered as committee chairs to help enhance the learning environment for the participants.
