While King’s has many successful graduates, for some the job market remains unstable as world conditions continue to impact our economy. The current employment situation will be the focus of Canadian journalist Jesse Brown’s upcoming talk, the next installment of the King’s University College Student Council’s (KUCSC) Speaker Series, presented with the London Poverty Research Centre at King’s.

The talk will take place in the Vitali Lounge, Wemple Hall on March 7, 2018 from 7 p.m. – 11 p.m. Tickets will be $5 for students and $10 for the general public.

Brown is an established and respected Canadian journalist, well-known for breaking the Jian Ghomeshi story. In October 2013, he established the podcast, Canadaland, which a year later was attracting over 10,000 weekly listeners. It can be accessed at www.canadalandshow.com.

His talk, called “How to Hustle,” Brown will be a discussion on life for students after university, and giving tips on how students can handle the threats they can face as they enter the labour market. He will also talk about his experiences as a journalist.

Claire Linley, Vice-President, Student Affairs at the King’s University College Students’ Council, says “it is important for students to know about and attend because Jesse Brown will be discussing how to navigate employment opportunities within a precarious economy. This is something that has the potential to touch every single student completing their undergraduate. At one point or another, most students feel some form of anxiety or unease about what they are going to do once they graduate. Jesse is coming to talk about how he navigated this difficult journey and to provide us with tools to help students as well.”

The event will begin with a 20-minute documentary about the London job market, created by the London Poverty Research Centre at King’s. The Centre is partnering with the King’s University Council Students’ Council in presenting Brown’s talk.

Previous speakers in the KUCSC Speaker Series have included Jane Elliott, Naomi Klein and Opal Tometi.

Tickets for the event can be purchased at King’s Connection in the King Student Life Centre.
