TORONTO, Ont. – The Varsity Blues brought an end to the purple and white winning streak on Saturday evening, topping the Mustangs in four sets (19-25, 20-25, 26-24, 21-25) at the Goldring Centre.
Prior to this game, Western had won five straight games – four of which needed only three sets.
Western and Toronto now hold matching 10-4 records. Despite the loss, the Mustangs remain comfortably in second place in the OUA West. The Varsity Blues sit in the same spot in the OUA East Division, which is currently topped by a 14-0 Ryerson contingent.
Fourth year middle
Kelsey Veltman topped the purple and white half of the scoresheet, recording 18 points across four sets.
Melissa Langegger was the second highest scoring Mustang, with 12.
Toronto was led by Alina Dormann's 19 points, as well as Anna Feore who added 14 to Toronto's total.
The first set saw the Varsity Blues establish a dominant six-point lead, only to have the Mustangs close the gap by the technical timeout when they were only down by two.
Toronto would regain their momentum to take the third set by a score of 25-19.
Set two saw again saw a Varsity Blue victory, with the team securing a 25-20 win.
Western began set three with their strongest showing yet to lead the Varsity Blues 16-10 at the technical. Despite a mounting comeback by Toronto that saw the two teams tied at 20-20, the Mustangs managed to hold them off enough to secure a 26-24 victory.
Toronto took through the final set, ultimately topping the Mustangs 25-21.
Western will be back on the floor tomorrow evening, when they head to Peterborough to take on the Trent Excalibur at 6 p.m.
