A new overnight stay at a London university residence is helping high school students prepare for the next chapter in their education.

Twenty members of the Boys and Girls Club are staying at King’s University College from Friday afternoon until Saturday afternoon. The students in grades 10 to 12 are attending information sessions and staying overnight at the college’s Wemple residence.

“The idea is to prepare students as much as we can and give them tools for success,” said Ana Castillo, a program co-ordinator with the club.

The students are in the club’s senior M.A.P. (My Action Plan) program that offers educational support such as tutoring, help in setting academic goals and scholarships. One of the program’s goals is to help students make the transition to college or university.

The overnight stay was added this year “to mirror the residence experience,” said Joe Henry, dean of students at King’s.

Students are getting a taste of residence food and activities.

“We are very excited,” Henry said. “It’s a chance to see what a university experience is like and to meet current (King’s) students.”

The sessions are focusing on study skills, time management, financial literacy, campus resources and other topics. Parents are invited to attend one of the last sessions before the students head home Saturday.

“A lot of students don’t know what to expect,” Castillo said. “This event gives them a reality check and helps them to prepare.”

About 60 students from Grade 9 to 12 are in the senior M.A.P. program.
