Beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman
Cardinal John Henry Newman (1801 – 1890), a British scholar, philosopher and writer, always kept universities close to his heart. He advocated that Catholic students who attended public universities be given a place to gather to support and encourage one another in their faith. World-wide Newman Centres and local campus ministries continue to take up the Cardinal’s challenge to help students integrate faith, intellectual study and ultimately “bring Christ into the world”. The Newman Catholic Club at the University of Western Ontario is the local Newman Center http://www.usc.uwo.ca/clubs/newman/.
Pope Benedict XVI will beatify John Henry Cardinal Newman on September 19, 2010 in Birmingham, England. Apostolic Journey of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI to the United Kingdom on the occasion of the beatification of Cardinal Newman.
