Master of Social Work

Message From The Director of the School of Social Work

On behalf of our faculty and staff, I would like to thank you for your interest in the Advanced Generalist, MSW program at King’s.  Our curriculum provides a solid academic and practice foundation for those who seek graduate-level preparation for social work practice. It meets the curriculum standards of the Canadian Association for Social Work Education (CASWE), as well as the anticipated needs of our profession.  This is a wonderful place for learning: a place where you can push conceptual boundaries, explore new territory, and enhance your skills.

I am confident, given our small size and the quality and commitment of our faculty to teaching, that our school will provide you with a warm and stimulating environment. King’s offers you an MSW program that will enhance the level of your professional competence and contribute to your personal growth.

Barbara Decker Pierce

With best wishes,

Barbara Decker Pierce, MBA, PhD, RSW
Director - School of Social Work

Statement of Educational Philosophy

The King’s University College School of Social Work’s Master of Social Work program is grounded in a research foundation in order to enhance the knowledge, practice and skills of social work professionals.  The program’s intent is:
The education of practitioner-researchers across the entire range of social work practice using an action-learning educational approach.

MSW Program Objectives

The General Objectives of the Advanced Generalist MSW program are to educate social workers for advanced generalist practice, including research and program evaluation, and to increase their administrative and supervisory competence.

King’s University College provides an academic environment that promotes open critical inquiry and welcomes students and faculty from diverse backgrounds.

Consistent with its value base, the College and its School of Social Work provide a learning milieu that fosters academic excellence and the development of professional social workers who are knowledgeable, skilled, and committed to social justice and the provision of services to those in need, especially the most marginalised and the poor.

The Advanced Generalist orientation of the MSW program provides for the development of knowledge and skill well beyond the undergraduate level in a full range of social work practice areas; including work with individuals, couples, families, groups, communities and organizations, with consideration for the organizational and societal contexts of practice.

The graduate program is aimed at educating advanced generalists who can practise with advanced skills, think critically and realistically evaluate research outcomes.
