What’s New for the Student Life Centre

2011 Annual Fund

The 2011 Annual Fund Campaign is well underway.  By now, you should have received your appeal letter in the mail outlining details of the Annual Campaign in support of the Darryl J. King Student Life Centre.

Enriching the Student Experience – The Darryl J. King Student Life Centre

Significant progress has been made in the last year on the development of the Darryl J. King Student Life Centre, the new social and academic hub of the campus.  With a 500-seat theatre, Writing Centre, Learning Commons and café, and student leadership offices, the King Centre will serve as the new social and intellectual hub of the campus.  Together with new appointments to our faculty, the Student Life Centre will enhance King’s University College’s emerging reputation as Canada’s leading Catholic liberal arts university.

Please take your seat ...

As part of this year’s Annual Fund Campaign, we are providing alumni and friends with a special opportunity to name a seat in the Joanne and Peter Kenny Theatre.

Alumni, faculty/staff, parents and friends are reserving seats in their own name and in recognition of milestones, celebrations and the people who have meaning in their lives.  Nameplates will become part of the rich history of the Darryl J. King Student Life Centre and King’s University College.

Your support is particularly important in ensuring the success of these initiatives.  No gift is too small; your participation is what counts.
You can donate on-line with Visa or MasterCard here at any time.

Erma Jacob gives back to King's

A King’s employee for over 32 years, Erma Jacob, who is currently the manager of administrative affairs in the Academic Dean’s Office, recently decided to give back to King’s. Her gift in support of the The Erma Jacob & Family Student Award, will give an English student with financial need some needed support ($1000/year). Jacob graduated from King's with a BA in English.

This award (effective fall 2015) was established by Jacob’s two sons, Nigel and Justin Jacob, in honour of her commitment to education and her many years of service to King’s. The award will be granted to a third or fourth year, full-time student registered at King’s. Preference will be given to a student registered in an English program, who has taken either a Canadian literature or Canadian studies course in the previous year.

King's announces $2.4 million student gift

At a ceremony held this morning at King’s University College, Student Council President Barshan Quadry announced a $2.4 million contribution to the Darryl J. King Student Life Centre on behalf of the student community at King’s. Scheduled to open fall 2013, the 41,000 sq. ft. facility will integrate a learning commons, student services, as well as social, spiritual and recreational space. The building will be conveniently connected to the Cardinal Carter Library. Designed by Perkins + Will in cooperation with London-based Cornerstone Architecture, the King Centre will meet LEED certification standards and feature: The Joanne and Peter Kenny Theatre - providing a permanent home for the King’s Players. This space will also allow the King’s community to host larger events for our students and the community. The Andy and Helen Spriet Learning Commons - linked to the Cardinal Carter Library and providing space for students to meet, study and gather in an informal area. The Joan Smith Student Leadership Suite - housing the King’s University College Students’ Council (KUCSC) offices. Games mezzanine and café. Outdoor patios, garden areas and a green roof. The King’s Connection Store (formerly the ProShop) for the sale of King’s clothing and other promotional items. Casual space for students and faculty to gather (includes a fireplace). “This is an exciting day,” says Quadry. “This building will be a hub for students for years to come. This contribution is a great way for King’s students present and future to leave a legacy.” “We are very proud of the work that our students are doing in the community and very grateful for their support of this project,” notes David Sylvester, Principal at King’s. “With the many shared spaces and environmentally sensitive design, this building will serve students for years to come and will be a hub for our King’s Community.” Named after Darryl J. King (BA ‘97 History), President of the Cambridge- Logikor Inc., the King Centre is slated to open fall 2013. The cost of the Darryl J. King Student Life Centre is estimated to be $11 million, with $9 million to be raised through philanthropic support, including the $1 million Darryl King gift (largest donation ever made by a King’s alum) and the $2.4 million student gift.

Since we unveiled the drawings for the Darryl J. King Student Life Centre at the 2010 Homecoming, we have received some new gifts towards the Centre and we have also received new and updated renderings of the space.

Darryl J. King Student Life Centre Gifts

Paul Stevenson ‘80, nephew to Dr. Desmond Dutrizac, has made a significant pledge to support the Darryl J. King Student Life Centre. In recognition of this support, the board room in Dante Lenardon Hall (DL 112) has been renamed the Dr. Desmond Dutrizac Board Room.

Faculty member Dr. Tozun Bahcheli has made a donation towards the Darryl J. King Student Life Centre as well.  In recognition of his gift, and for his forty years of service at King’s, Room 114 in Dante Lenardon Hall has been renamed the Dr. Tozun Bahcheli Seminar Room.

The Sisters of St. Joseph’s have also made another significant gift to the Student Life Campaign. This gift will assist with the “greening” of [E1] the Darryl J. King Student Life Centre and will help ensure that the building is as environmentally-friendly as possible with LEED Certification. Their first gift to the campaign created a travel bursary in support of the Social Justice and Peace program.

Lastly, the students at King’s University College have also committed to matching their current $1.2 million pledge for the Darryl J. King Student Life Centre.
