Donors Making a Difference

Boys’ and Girls’ Club of London

In 2009, the Boys’ and Girls’ Club of London Foundation made a generous donation to the Student Awards and Bursary Program at King’s University College through an initial endowment of $70,000...but their kindness didn’t end there! Just this October, the Boys’ and Girls’ Club added an additional $30,000 to their donation bringing it up to a total of $100,000 and with the matching funds program from the Ontario Trust for Student Support, the endowment stands at $200,000.

The Boys’ and Girls’ Club hold a mission of personal development, education and community involvement for the children that they assist every year. The award recipients will be students who have been participants in the Mentoring Academic Program (M.A.P.) at the Boys’ and Girls’ Club and have been accepted at King’s University College. The bursary is granted to one or more students entering King’s the next academic year. Returning students are also encouraged to apply each year and will be considered for funding in 2nd, 3rd or 4th year, dependent upon their good standing at the College and availability of funds.

The M.A.P. program at the Boys’ and Girls’ Club is aimed at helping youth to continue on the road to success in school. There are four main pillars of support that include: Academic, Social, Financial and Advocacy supports for each youth. Each student’s MAP is specifically developed to meet the needs of each youth.
With the help of the Boys’ and Girls’ Club, the King’s University College Foundation is able to further assist these students as they complete their post-secondary studies while upholding all the ideals put forth by the M.A.P. program. We are pleased to partner with the Boys’ and Girls’ Club to support the success of the M.A.P. students at King’s!

Gifts of Love, Remembrance and Change: The Joan Mason-Grant Awards for Experiential Learning in Social Justice and Peace Studies

Jerry Mason and Betty UpJohn Mason with Joan’s granddaughter Matilda.

On Friday, October 22 the Foundation and Alumni Affairs office held an event honouring the memory of Dr. Joan Mason-Grant and celebrating the award in her name. Dr. Bernie Hammond spoke about the impact of his dear friend, Dr. Mason-Grant, upon the development and growth of the Social Justice and Peace Studies program here at King’s. The first recipient of the Dr. Joan Mason-Grant Awards for Experiential Learning in Social Justice and Peace Studies, Kaleigh Foran, made a presentation about her recent trips to Guatemala and the Dominican Republic. Ms. Foran spoke very eloquently about how the award, and the Social Justice and Peace Studies program as a whole, had effectively changed her life for the better.

In attendance at the event were the family of Dr. Mason-Grant as well as close friends and associates. The award was made possible through the wishes of Dr. Mason-Grant herself and with the assistance of her father, Jerry Mason, and step-mother, Betty UpJohn-Mason, as well as through the support of her colleagues and friends. The award program grants assistance to eight or more students in the Social Justice and Peace Studies program who are experiencing financial need and who will be using the award to fund experiential learning opportunities. Each eligible student will be awarded between $500-2000, depending on the length of their trip. Thank you to all those who supported these awards.
