4490E Honours Thesis.

The design and execution of a research project and its presentation in the form of an honor's thesis under the direction of a faculty member. Thesis to be submitted by April 15 of the fourth year. Students who wish to take this course must apply to the Chair, Department of Sociology, King's College. (This course is restricted to students in fourth-year honors Sociology at King's College).

 Guidelines for Sociology 3398/99; 4498/99

  1. Supervising professors normally will be permanent faculty in the Department of Sociology at King's College. Students who wish to do an independent study with other faculty require permission of the chair, King's Department of Sociology.
  2. Supervising professors normally will have a maximum of two independent studies students (or groups) per term.
  3. An essay is required from all independent study students. The essay should be about 5,000 words (20 pages).
  4. Independent study students normally will do work in the area of expertise of the supervising professors.
  5. The supervising professor usually will meet biweekly with independent study students.
  6. In most cases, library research only will be pursued by independent study students, not primary research.

  1. Supervising professors normally will be permanent faculty in the Department of Sociology at King's College. Students who wish to do a thesis with other faculty require permission of the chair, King's Department of Sociology. No outside reader is required.
  2. Students normally will choose an honours thesis topic and supervising professor in the spring prior to the academic year in which the honours thesis will be done.
  3. The normal length of the honours thesis will be 10,000-15,000 words (40 to 60 pages).
  4. Honours thesis proposals will be presented to the supervising professor before October 15. Several students and supervising professors may wish to meet as a group early in the term.
  5. Honours thesis students may have additional advising professors, if they wish., but only one supervising professor.
  6. Supervising professors normally will have a maximum of two honours thesis students per term.
  7. The honours thesis student. will meet with the supervising professor irregularly, as required, over the academic year.
  8. The thesis is due April 15.
