MSW Practicum
The Master of Social Work program at King's University College continues the strong value-centred tradition of the College and the congruent generalist orientation of its Bachelor of Social Work (Honors) program. King's is a Catholic College with a solid Christian value base and a long affiliation with The University of Western Ontario. It is an academic environment that promotes open critical inquiry and welcomes students and faculty from diverse backgrounds. Consistent with its value base, the College and its School of Social Work provide a learning milieu that fosters academic excellence and the development of professional social workers who are knowledgeable, skilled, and committed to social justice and the provision of services to those in need, especially the most marginalised and the poor.
The Advanced Generalist orientation of the MSW program provides for the development of knowledge and skill well beyond the undergraduate level in a full range of social work practice areas; including work with individuals, couples, families, groups, communities and organizations, with consideration for the organizational and societal contexts of practice. This advanced generalist orientation recognizes a need to facilitate positive change at a variety of levels, ranging from individual, through organizational, to societal; and the necessity of ongoing practice-based research as well as administrative competence. Increasingly, modern professional social work practice requires critical appraisal, adaptability, flexibility, cross-sectorial understanding, and multi-tasking skills. Thus, the graduate program is aimed at educating advanced generalists who can practise with advanced skills, think critically and realistically evaluate research outcomes; professionals who are highly adaptive and broadly skilled.
