Transcripts

Transcripts from Ontario post secondary institutions can be ordered as part of the online application process.  Students who have attended post-secondary institutions out of province or out of country are required to submit two official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions (including community colleges) attended (whether a program was completed or not), and a translation where required.  (Translations alone do not constitute official transcripts). Transcripts not ordered through the online application process must be received by the School of Social Work, King’s University College, in envelopes sealed by the issuing institution.

Transcripts are to be sent directly to Kylene Dube, MSW Practicum and Program Liaison, School of Social Work, King’s University College, and NOT to the Registrar’s Office at King’s University College or the School of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Studies at the University of Western Ontario. If a student is reapplying to our MSW program, official transcripts submitted last year may be used this year provided the applicant has not completed any courses at that institution since the first application.

Important:

  1. If an applicant is not currently completing university courses, the two official final transcripts must be received by the School of Social Work by the application deadline, December 1st.
  2. If an applicant is currently completing university courses, two official interim transcripts from that institution must be received by the School of Social Work by January 15th
The interim transcripts must indicate the final grades in first-term courses this year.  Two official final transcripts will then be submitted to the School once the course requirements are completed at the end of the academic year.

The academic requirements for admission must be completed by the end of August.

International students and applicants who obtained the Bachelor of Social Work degree from a country other than Canada must provide the School of Social Work with their BSW course outlines in English to determine equivalency.   Documents must be forwarded to the MSW Practicum & Program Liaison in the School of Social Work at King’s University College by December 1st.

Selection of MSW Candidates

Enrollment in the MSW program is limited each year to 30 to 35 students, including both full-time and part-time candidates. In the admissions process, candidates are selected according to a scoring system which is based on both the academic and non-academic requirements.

In order to be considered for admission, applicants must:

  1. be academically eligible (refer to the section on academic requirements for admission). To be academically eligible, a candidate must meet EACH of the academic requirements. An academic admission score out of 100 will be calculated for those candidates who are academically eligible.

    AND
  2. score a minimum of 65 out of the total 100 non-academic points which are comprised of:
Two Letters of Reference (5 points each) 10 points
Resumé 30 points
Study Plan 60 points

Candidates who meet BOTH of these requirements - academic and non-academic - are eligible for admission and will have their total overall scores calculated as follows:

Academic Score out of 100 points
Total Non-Academic Score out of  100 points
Total Academic and Non-Academic Score out of 200 points

This total is then divided by 2 to obtain a total overall score out of 100 points. An applicant's TOTAL OVERALL SCORE (out of 100 points) determines admission to the MSW program. The total overall scores of all eligible candidates are ranked in order from highest to lowest. The School of Social Work recommends to the Faculty of Graduate Studies those candidates with the highest total overall scores.

Possession of a criminal record does not disqualify an applicant from admission to the MSW program. During the course of the MSW program however, a police check of record of offences may be required by a potential placement agency, at the student’s expense. The majority of agencies now require a police record check and vulnerable persons screening prior to the commencement of a social work practicum. Students who are unable to meet these requirements may experiences delays in completing the program.
