Catholic Studies for Teachers
This program provides students with the opportunity to complete a BA (Honors) in Catholic Studies and another major of their choice with guaranteed admission to Western’s Faculty of Education to complete the Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree. This program is intended for preparation for teaching in the Catholic school system. Students can choose either the Junior Intermediate or the Senior Intermediate streams in the BEd program.
In Years 2, 3, and 4 of the BA (Honors) or four-year BA program, students complete Religious Studies courses in Catholic studies in areas as diverse as Scriptures, Catholic symbols, tradition and morality, issues in religion, Judaism and Islam or Eastern Traditions. Students will also register in service learning courses in which they will be placed in Catholic schools to assist teachers in the classroom as well as work in other parts of the school (such as the library, special education) to get an overall view of the educational institution as a whole and its culture. Students will receive extensive orientation before their placements and will also have regular meetings with the program coordinator throughout their time in the schools.
Students who are interested in applying to the Catholic Studies for Teachers Program must apply to Arts at King’s (EKA) and indicate Catholic Studies for Teachers as the major area of interest.
Students who apply to this program will need to fill out a supplementary application package. Application information can be found at the bottom of this page. Please print off and fully complete the forms from the three links below.
Admission to this program will be determined by King’s as well as Western’s Faculty of Education and will be based on grades as well as additional criteria. Students will be asked to complete a dossier which includes a personal statement outlining why they want to become a teacher; a resume describing volunteerism, extra-curricular activities, part-time work and community service which demonstrates their interest and skills related to teaching; a reference letter(s) from a teacher, counsellor, chaplain or principal; a letter from their parish priest or chaplain confirming their commitment to their faith which is a requirement for employment in the Catholic school system and is essential for fulfillment of the service learning component of the program; an applicant must also indicate their preference for either the Junior Intermediate or Senior Intermediate stream in the BEd program in their supplementary application.
