International Programs and Opportunities

Social Justice and Peace Studies.

The Social Justice and Peace Studies program at King's University College offers a wide range of overseas and cross-cultural opportunities with various international programs and non-government organizations. These programs may be undertaken at any time after first year for course credit. These volunteer and internship experiences present the opportunity to bridge theory and applied knowledge and contextualize course material. Service to others opens the doors to growth at individual, community and global levels, fostering the realization of connectivity to others and our planet beyond our consumer based connections.

Students participating in international volunteer experiences lasting less than one month, accompanied by appropriate research and written work, may earn a 1/2 course credit.

D.R.E.A.M.S.
Dominican  Republic Education and Medical Support (D.R.E.A.M.S.) is a Canadian organization that assists Dominicans in building houses, a school and a water purification system. Students will spend the duration of their reading week in February building houses and participate in local infrastructure projects. D.R.E.A.M.S. is a short term volunteer abroad program

Intercordia Canada
is a non-profit organization that partners with Canadian universities to offer students a unique, engaged-learning experience that is university accredited. The goal of this innovative learning program is to encourage moral responsiveness, develop respect for diversity and a valuing of other cultures, religions and socio-economic backgrounds that will enable Canadian students to attain solidarity with others who are different. Students from King’s and across Canada spend a total of three months abroad at placements in Latin America, Eastern Europe, Africa and the Middle East, and may gain a full course credit from King’s University College.  Intercordia Canada is a long term volunteering program.  For Further information see:  http://www.intercordiacanada.org

Social Justice and Peace Studies 370a
Food Security: From Ontario to Rural El Salvador” examines the global food system and uses this as a lens that magnifies global relations of power, exploring the many factors that threaten food security. The heart of the course is participation in a two-week delegation to rural El Salvador, where students will learn directly how these challenges are being met. On return to Ontario, the class will extend its study, and focus the efforts of the group on linking its experience in El Salvador to their own participation in the global food economy, and explore alternatives in Ontario.  For further information see:

 Management and Organizational Studies and Economics

The Economics and the Management and Organizational Studies (MOS) programs at King’s University College provide the opportunity for students to register for courses offered at Dongbei University of Finance and Economics (DUFE) in Dalian, China, and at Chongqing Technology and Business University (CTBU) in Chongqing, China. Up to fifteen students will be selected to complete courses in business or economics in the spring of each year at DUFE, and up to ten to complete a course in business or economics at CTBU.

This program is intended for King’s MOS or Economics students who have lived in Canada for the majority of their university study. However, other students may apply providing they meet the criteria for the program, and will be advised if spaces are available.

Interested students attend an Information Session held in October-November of the previous year of the exchange and apply on-line through specific China Exchange web pages found on the Economics, Business and Mathematics Department web pages.  School of Social Work

The School of Social Work at King's University College has international experiences for students registered in the professional BSW program. Currently short term international opportunities are available in Mexico in partnership with the Cuernavaca Center for Intercultural Dialogue on Development. A long term international placement is available in Costa Rica as well. These experiences can broaden understanding of language and culture, increase knowledge of social development, and improve knowledge of social, political and economic conditions in a developing country. The international experience is the equivalent of a fourth year elective.

 Modern Languages

The Modern Languages department at King’s University College offers a number of international exchange opportunities. Students may spend their third year of the French Program studying at the Université de Nice or the Université de Tours in France. Trois-Pistoles French Immersion School
The University of Western Ontario offers French instruction at a French immersion school located in Trois-Pistoles, Québec. This is the oldest university-sponsored French immersion program in Canada and many of the undergraduate language courses in French are offered in the five-week spring and/or summer session of the school. Explore French Immersion
The Explore program offers students the opportunity to study in French while experiencing another region of Canada. Explore is a five-week intensive language-learning course which may be taken in either the spring or summer. King’s University College students are eligible to participate in most exchange, study abroad and volunteer abroad programs available through The University of Western Ontario. Students Without Borders

Funded placements are still available for January 2010 with Students Without Borders™ (SWB)! Please visit the website for available placements at: www.wusc.ca/en/volunteer/swb/current_placements

The program will cover the following:

  • Pre-departure orientation
  • Return airfare ticket
  • Single entry visa (if required)
  • Recommended vaccines
  • Accommodation
  • Living allowance
  • Health insurance
  • Debriefing upon return to Canada

The qualified candidate must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
  • Be currently registered or have recently graduated from a Canadian college or university;
  • Be medically fit;
  • Successfully pass the selection process;
  • Be available for a minimum of 12 weeks in placement;
  • Commit to carry?out at least one public engagement activity in Canada prior to departure or upon return.

The selected participant will be required to contribute $3 000.00 to cover a portion of the total costs of the internship
