International Outgoing Exchange GAQ

  1. How will I receive credit for my Exchange, Study Abroad or Volunteer Abroad experience?

Each program and faculty will have their own requirements but there are some similarities. For the summer Dongbei exchange, the courses offered will be Organization behavior (equivalent to MOS 180), and a second year economics course. The Social Work Department’s exchange experience is equivalent to a fourth year elective. Volunteer Abroad opportunities through the Social Justice and Peace Studies program vary according to the duration of the experience and the level of the independent study course taken. Students participating in international volunteer experiences lasting less than one month, accompanied by an independent study course will receive a half credit. Students participating in an international experience exceeding one month, accompanied by appropriate research and written work, may earn one full course credit.

  2. What makes up an independent study course?

Independent study courses with the Social Justice and Peace Studies Program are usually taken in conjunction with international volunteer experiences. Independent study courses may be taken at the 200, 300 and 400 levels. Students engage in course work related to topics such as global poverty, development, history, and the political economy of the region in which they intend to volunteer. The pre-requisite for a SJPS Independent Study Course is SJPS 020.

  3. Can a King’s student participate in study abroad and exchange programs offered by The University of Western Ontario or other affiliated Colleges?

Yes. Almost all exchange and study abroad programs that are offered by The University of Western Ontario are available to King's University College students. For an extensive list of these opportunities see The University of Western Ontario’s Student Development Service website at: http://www.sds.uwo.ca/int/exchange/

  4. How do I decide on a program or opportunity?

This may be a difficult decision it is helpful to reflect upon what you want from your international experience. Your international experience can coincide with your professional interests, and your academic, social, and personal goals and responsibilities. International opportunities are not limited to certain fields of study. For example a student of Social Work may take part in the Dongbei, China exchange and an economics student may volunteer abroad with a Social Justice and Peace Studies exchange opportunity.

  5. What is the application process like, and are there any deadlines I should know of?

Many programs have deadlines. Because many exchange opportunities take place during the summer, deadlines usually fall before the second term begins. These include the DUFE exchange to China, the Explore and Trois Pistoles programs, as well as Social Work and Social Justice and Peace exchanges. For specific deadlines attend an information session or inquire with a faculty member.

  6. Are there any scholarships or bursaries available to offset the cost?

Yes, King's University College recognizes the merits of international study and students can apply for a $750 bursary for any international exchange, study abroad or volunteer abroad program lasting less than a year, and a $1,500 bursary for full year programs. The application for this bursary is available at:
    https://www.kingscollege.net/omniForm/omniForm.pl?formID=18

  7. Will I need to learn the language?
Not necessarily. Some courses are offered in English in non-English speaking countries. Volunteering or studying in a foreign culture provides an excellent opportunity to learn a new language. For certain exchange programs proficiency in Spanish, French, Korean, or Mandarin may be required.

If you have any more questions or comments contact Linda Weber at the International Student office or contact the coordinator of the exchange which you are interested in.
