New book release for Jacquie Newman

King’s is pleased to announce that Jacquetta (Jacquie) Newman, Associate Professor for the Department of Political Science at King’s has just come out with a new book release titled Women, Politics, and Public Policy: The Political Struggles of Canadian Women. This is the second edition of the book which includes Canadian perspectives on the intersectionality of feminism, women’s politics, and public policy-making. In this new edition, you will also find new coverage of contemporary topics and updated research and statistics.

When asked what message Newman would like to get across to readers of her book, she explained “[t]he main message is that while much changed for the better in Canadian women's lives during the 20th century, in the early 21st century there is still much that needs to be done to achieve equality between men and women.” Newman also added  that “iIn working towards that equality there is still a large role for feminist thought and activism. However, this feminism needs to be inclusive and respectful of the ways in which different women (and men) are positioned in our society given their race, ethnicity, class, age, and ability.”

Newman would like to thank the people who work at the Library of Parliament and Statistics Canada whom she describes as the “unsung heroes of this book.” As well, Newman would like to thank her family, friends, students, the Department of Political Science and the staff at Oxford.  And finally, Newman would like to send out special thanks to Joan Mason Grant: “Joan Mason Grant was an outstanding feminist philosopher and it was through many long discussions and conversations with her and reference to the books she suggested that the third chapter took shape and my own understanding of the subject became richer and more complete.”
