Dora Tam and Siu Ming Kwok attend 3rd annual conference for the Asian Criminological Society
Last month, Dora Tam and Siu Ming Kwok, associate professors of the School of Social Work, visited Taipei, Taiwan for the Asian Criminological Society’s 3rd Annual Conference: Asian Innovations in Criminology and Criminal Justice. The conference, held from December 16th – 19th, welcomed approximately 300 other delegates from 17 countries or regions around the world. Together, Tam and Kwok presented a paper titled "A theoretical model for Chinese youth in conflict with the law in Canada.” This paper discusses a qualitative study of the Chinese youth in Canada, and their parents’ experiences dealing with our criminal justice system.
According to Tam, the study of criminology in Asia has greatly expanding over the last few years. When asked about her impressions of the conference she remarked that “[t]hey have made significant gains in the study of cybercrime in particular. Also, the East Asian governments usually take academia more seriously.” Dr. Tam explained how the vice-president of the Republic of China (Taiwan) attended the opening ceremony and addressed the people of the conference. Tam followed in saying “[t]he other impression is that King’s student should have more first-hand exposure and connections with international communities in terms of academic exchange and research collaboration. There is an old saying in Chinese: “To read thousands of books are not as good as to travel thousands of miles.”"
