An Evening with Cornel West
On Thursday, March 8th, 2012, the King’s University College Students’ Council in collaboration with the Black Students Association, Students United for the Representation of Latin America and King's Philosophy Students Association will be welcoming renowned philosopher, actor, critic and activist Cornel West to speak to the King’s community. With a talk titled “On Solidarity: Breaking the Shackles of Capitalism and the Occupy Movement,” West will tackle themes such as capitalism, social justice, solidarity, and racism.
West is the Class of 1943 University Professor at Princeton University. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard in three years and obtained his MA and PhD in Philosophy at Princeton. West is a highly prominent and provocative democratic intellectual who has taught at various prestigious academies such as the University of Paris, Union Theological Seminary, Yale and Harvard. Among the many books he has written and edited, West is best known for his classic Race Matters, Democracy Matters, and his new memoir Brother West: Living and Loving Out Loud. Many students may also recognize West from frequent appearances on the Bill Maher Show, the Colbert Report, CNN and C-Span as well as on his dear Brother, Tavis Smiley’s PBS TV Show. West has recorded multiple spoken word albums with artists such as Prince, Talib Kweli and Andre 3000. Underneath all of this, West has a passion to communicate to a vast variety of publics in order to keep alive the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. – a legacy of telling the truth and bearing witness to love and justice.
The King’s community is privileged to welcome such an honourable guest like Cornel West into our school. An Evening with Dr. Cornel West will take place on March 8th, at 7:00 p.m. in Labatt Hall, Room 105. Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for non students and will be available at Info Source and the King’s Connection.
