King's student, Rebeca Sousa, candidate for London Youth Advisory Council-Western representative

Rebeca Sousa is a 2017 Western representative candidate for the London Youth Advisory Council (LYAC). Sousa is a fourth-year student at King’s University College studying an Honors Specialization in Childhood and Social Institutions, Certificate in Child Advocacy and a Minor in Thanatology. Sousa will be included in the ballot for the University Student Council (USC) elections on January 30th and 31st along with Hanna Kim, a second-year student on main campus studying Health Sciences.
As a candidate for the Western-LYAC Councillor, if elected, Sousa would represent Western and affiliates students on the LYAC. The Western-LYAC Councillor works to communicate concerns of the Western and affiliates communities to city councillors. The London Youth Advisory Council is a registered federal not-for-profit group. It works to bring young people into conversations about important local decisions and to ensure that student residents are taken seriously by local politicians and decision makers.
“I learned about the work that the LYAC is doing this past semester through a children’s advocacy course at King’s. In that class I wrote a report about the importance of the work the LYAC is doing, and the difficulty of getting the youth perspectives heard. By being a part of the LYAC I want to work towards having the voices of Western students heard,” says Sousa.
Sousa outlines three political and community issues she thinks are important in her platform: public transit, mental health, and employment. Sousa believes more consultation with citizens is needed on the council about public transit. Sousa will advocate for partnerships between the universities and mental health organizations. Lastly, for employment Sousa is interested in doing research with students about the job opportunities in London.
In Kim’s platform, she outlines youth involvement in politics, mental health, and public transportation as important political and community issues. Kim’s vision is to make politics more accessible for Western students by connecting them with more opportunities. Kim believes in prioritizing mental health. Lastly, Kim will address the community issues related to public transportation.
The LYAC voting will be held in conjunction with the University Student’s Council elections at Western on January 30th and 31th. All affiliates students are eligible to vote in the USC elections.
