Ongoing ECO Inititatives

King's Wheels

Kings Wheels was established to provide the students of Kings University College with an alternative method of transportation that is reliable, physically active, and furthermore environmentally friendly. King's Wheels is one small way that the KUCSC is responding to students’ requests to reduce our campus' ecological footprint.

On-Campus Recycling

Ink & Toner Collection
New for 2011, Physical Plant is collecting used ink toners from on-campus photocopiers and printers, and is also accepting household printer cartridges for recycling!  Please drop off your used cartridges at Central Services in the Wemple Building.

Cell Phones
Together with the Ink & Toner campaign, the same drop-off boxes for your toners also accept the batteries from cell phones, and even the cell phones themselves!  Visit Central Services in the Wemple Building to drop yours off today!

Batteries
The Green Team collects all types of used batteries and takes them for recycling at Best Buy.  Drop off your household batteries at any of the collection points on campus!

Light bulbs
The Physical Plant department has partnered with Aevitas Inc. to provide recycling of on-campus materials such as lightbulbs from classrooms, dorms and offices.  This is the third year of the recycling program with Aevitas.  In 2009, the College successfully diverted and recycled 550 lighbulbs - producing 158.4kg of glass, 1.97kg of metals, 2.48kg of phosphor and 0.016kg of mercury.

Tree Campaign

To help raise funds for planting more trees on campus, the Aramark cafeteria proudly sells reusable, metal water bottles featuring the King's logo.  $1 from each sold will go to the Green King's Tree Fund.  Our goal is to raise $2000 which will be matched dollar for dollar by ReForest London to plant coniferous trees on our campus! Thanks for your support!

20 Minute Makeover

Continuing in our tradition of environmental awareness, the College is celebrating it's 2nd year as a participant in the City of London's 20 Minute Makeover.  Students, staff, faculty and administration are welcome to participate in our clean-up efforts.  In 2011, members of the College will participate in both the 15 Minute Makeover and an Earth Day Green-Up of the community.

On Earth Day, April 22, 2009, King's launched several new initiatives aimed at reducing our impact on the environment.

These awareness campaigns include:

  • Light's Out - a focus on having office, meeting rooms, and classroom lights turned out when not in use.
  • Get Mugged - encouraging members of the community to bring their travel mugs or another reusable cup to receive 10 cents off their beverage purchase at ARAMARK or Tim Horton's on campus
  • Got Batteries? - a battery collection campaign to encourage members of the King's community to drop off their used household batteries at 2 locations on campus. (Central Services - Wemple,or the Social Work Office - Labatt Hall) to ensure they are recycled properly.
  • Bi-Annual Campus Green-Ups - do your part & help keep our campus clean and green! (Spring & Fall of each year)
As always, we encourage all members of the King's community to think of new & exciting ways to live green.
